It is possible to see the great places of the world without breaking your bank. Many times dealing with locals rather than handlers is more of the experience. Get out of your comfort zone a little. Some of the best adventures and restaurant finds have been when I asked someone local or navigated the train system.

For example, a cruise around the island of Manhattan on a private or chartered voyage runs over $80 per person. Solution: a ride on the Staten Island Ferry - a free roundtrip boat ride that provides excellent views of the Statue of Liberty and the city skyline.
Or a cruise and view the sky scrapers along Chicago's waterways, a cruise goes for $80 per person but a water taxi is only $2.00 for a single ride. It's the same view.
